We love the place, O God,
Wherein thine honour dwells; The joy of thine abode, All earthly joy excels. It is the house of prayer, Wherein thy servants meet; And thou, O Lord, art there, Thy chosen flock to greet. We love the word of life, The word that tells of peace, Of comfort in the strife, And joys that never cease. We love to sing below, For mercies freely given; But O, we long to know, The triumph song of heaven. Lord Jesus, give us grace, On earth to love thee more, In heaven to see thy face, And with the saints adore. |
These may have been the two original verses replaced by Sir H. W. Baker (Source): We love the sacred font; for there the Holy Dove to pour is ever wont his blessing from above. We love thine altar, Lord; O what on earth so dear? For there in faith adored, we find thy presence near. |

According to Dr. Philip HIscock's notes on the songs in Vinland Music's Songs of Newfoundland & Labrador Vol. 2, the words of this hymn were composed by the Rev. William Bullock for the opening of St. Paul's Church in Trinity, NL, and the hymn was first published in 1854. The current version includes Bullock's first two verses; Sir. H. W. Baker, replaced the two of the original verses that may have been more appropriate for a new church opening or consecration. The tune was supplied by Bishop Henry Jenner.
According to the Heritage NL website page on St. Paul's Anglican Church (Trinity), the church was constructed in 1820, and William Bullock served as its minister from 1822 until 1841. [My note: It may not have been "officially" opened until after Rev. Bullock arrived.] |
