There are many different versions and arrangements of lyrics, and some (mostly minor) differences in melodies, among the youTube videos on this page. The accordion and guitar-chord notations below accompany one version, of many. Such variations are expected for folk songs that have been around for centuries.

GUITAR CHORD NOTATION First Draft - I'm just learning how to match chords to
melody, and obviously have much to learn. There are

According toTom Brokaw: (Shenandoah) "... was a song that was developed by the boatmen on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and it's the tale of a man who pines for the daughter of Shenandoah, who was a famous Iowa chief..."
Some versions confuse the father and daughter, seeming to refer to them both as Shenandoah. Some sources attribute the song to the French-Canadian voyageurs who, in their great canoes, were probably the first "Europeans" to explore the great Missouri and Mississippi rivers. One version goes by the name "Across the wide Missouri." Also, there are some versions that are about the Shenandoah River and Valley in Virginia and West Virginia. By the late 1800's it was also being sung, with modified lyrics, as a sea shanty. And ... some (perhaps most) versions contain a confused mixture of one or more of the above sources. However, the confusion is offset by the beauty of the melody, and the various fantastic orchestral and choral arrangements built around it. Click HERE for additional info about this song (wikipedia).
