POP GOES THE WEASEL

Time signature:  6/8
Tempo: ~  bpm.
Traditional
Return to BA6 - Unit 3
It is believed that the tune for "Pop Goes The Weasel" was initially a dance jig, perhaps dating back to the 1600's.   By the early 1850's it was a popular social dance in England.

Today, it is mainly viewed as a children's song.  However, it has been suggested that the original lyrics, in adddition to being an aid to learning the tune, may have been a social commentary, now clouded by the many changes in wording.

Lyrics:
English version
Half a pound  of tuppenny  rice,
Half a pound of treacle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Up and down the City Road,
In and out the Eagle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Every night when I go out,
The monkey's on the table,
Take a stick and knock it off,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

A penny for a ball of thread
Another for a needle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

All around the cobbler's bench
the monkey chased the people;
The donkey thought 'twas all in fun,
Pop! Goes the weasel.
