ABOUT THIS PAGE: UNDER CONSTRUCTION - More sources to be added.
This page lists many of the vendor and online sources of lyrics and sheet music notation that I have found useful in learning to play the accordion & guitar tunes covered on this site. I've also included some sources that have been recommended by trusted friends, although I have not used them myself.
SOURCES OF MUSIC & LYRICS - CANADIAN TUNES - Newfoundland & Labrador
My copies of most of these NL publications were purchased at music stores in St. John's and Mount Pearl, NL, including Reid Music, O'Brien's Music, Music Collection, and Long and McQuade.
As of August 2020 there are fifteen songbooks listed on their web site, including the outstanding five volume series "Songs of Nfld & Lab".
These seven volumes cover a total of nearly 180 different songs. Highly recommended for anyone and everyone interested in the folk music of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many of these Vinland Music songbooks may be found at music stores throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and, of course, they may also be purchased online. |
Kelly Russell is an outstanding musician, music-teacher, and music publisher. Working with such great Newfoundland fiddle players as Emile Benoit and Rufus Guinchard, he has collected more than 500 traditional tunes unique to this Province. Over the past couple of decades, Newfoundland's Bill Wiseman (Uncle Billy) has published more than 30 volumes of button-accordion music, covering more than 450 traditional tunes, using his unique accordion notation. This has represented a positive contribution to the revival of button-accordion music in Newfoundland and Labrador, perhaps also in other parts of the world.
Although his accordion notation and approach are somewhat different from mine, and although I am not personally familiar with most of his publications, I have trusted friends who have found many of his volumes, especially those with accompanying CD's, very helpful. Thus, I would like to suggest his work to you, both as a source of additional tunes and as an alternate approach to learning to play our favorite instrument and tunes. |
