A lively Canadian (dance) Reel

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Additional accordion notation may need to be added,
and the existing notation and video keys need to be
checked, and perhaps adjusted. It would also be
good to find some videos in keys other than "D".
The existing notation (below) is intended to match
(as closely as possible) youTube videos 1, 3 & 4.

Accordion Notation
Beats per bar = 2
Beat symbol = Double dot ( : ) or equivalent |
Inside row (low) = Buttons 3 to 7* plus o3*
Outside row (high) = Buttons 6 to 11* |
The St. Anne's Reel, like most traditional reels, can be looked upon as a theme with many (mostly minor) variations. Evidence includes the youTube videos that are embedded below, as well as the popular traditional tune notation site, the SESSION, which contains notation sheets for 20 variations on this reel.
There is also sheet music for the two interesting variants (from Jay Ungar and the Kilkenny Tavern) found on the tunearch.org site.
My favorite variant is from Don Messer, in the third youTube video below.
Another of my favorite variants on this reel is from Lauren Abel of the TUNE PROJECT site.
This is an excellent fee-based (not free) fiddle tutorial site, with a small, but growing, library of sheet music matched to Lauren's youTube videos, some of which are available for free on youTube. This is the first of the embedded videos below, and is a great one to start with, especially if you are attempting to learn this tune "by ear". Here, Lauren gives the basic tune, in a phrase by phrase process, leaving you, once you have mastered the basics, to add ornamentation as you see fit.
The following notation may need to be adjusted to match the variety of variants for this reel.
Part A ( with repeat)
> > "6 "7* | .7 "7 "8* "7 "7* "6 "5* | .5 .4 "4 "4
"6 "6* | .5* .4* "4* "4* "6 "6* | .5 .4 "4 "4
"6 "7* | .7 "7 "8* "7 "7* "6 "5* | .5 .4 "4 "4
"6 "6* | "5* "4* "5* "6 "6* "6 "7* "6* | :6 .6 <
Part B (with repeat)
> "8 "8* | "7 "8 "7 "6 "5 "6 "7 "8* | .8 .8* .8*
"8* "7 | "7* 8* 7* 6* "5 "6* "7* "8* | .9* .8 .8
"8 "8* | "7 "8 "7 "6 "5 "6 "7 "8* | .8 .8* .8*
"8* "7 | "7* "6 "6* "5* "5 "6* "7* 8* | .7 .6 .6 < <
Repeat whole as often as desired.

Embedded youTube VIDEOS
Twelve youTube videos, all in the key of D.
For practice "playing-along", this is great for those of you with A-D or D-G button accordions! Else listen to it a few times to pick up the distinct rhythm, and then use one of the above notations to play along on your G-C or C-F box.

If you have an A-D or a D-G accordion, then this video can help you to learn this tune "by ear". For other accordions, the notation above may help.

If you have friends who are learning to play fiddle tunes "by ear" or "standard notation", you can point them to this site. The full Tune Project's (for a fee, not for free) web site, which is small but growing, is quite good.

Background Information & Links - Scottish Reels
Check out the following brief introduction to Scottish REELS in general, and SINGLE REELS in particular, including an MP3 rendition of MAXWELL'S REEL:
1. Click HERE for the Royal Scottish Country-Dance Society (RSCDS) page on REELS.
Their page will open in a separate tab, so can remove it to another part of your
screen if you wish.
2. After reading their brief general introduction, Select SINGLE REELS for more specific
information, an MP3 player for MAXWELL'S RANT, and standard sheet music for tune.
3. Go to the MP3 player shown, and click on the > arrow at left of player to hear
MAXWELL'S RANT.
This rendition corresponds to the button-accordion notation given above, which is based on
the sheet music given, and is thus a good source for practice. If you find the rendition too
fast to follow (or to play along with), click on the triple dot on the right end of the MP3 player,
choose Playback speed, and select either 0.75 or 0.5 (or even 0.25, if necessary).
