I'm not sure who wrote the lyrics above, or the original melody, though it is likely that Smiley Bayes wrote #1 and Bud Davidge #2. The following youTube comments fail to clarify the confusion.
According to Craig Payne (in a 2015 comment below the Catriona O'Donovan youTube video), this song "was written by Pat Casey and was first recorded by The Coasters of Burgeo, NL. a few years after, Bud Davidge and Sim Savory of the Fortune Bay band SIMANI recorded It for the Fortune Bay Musicians album, and later added it to a revised version of their Music And Friends album, released in 1999." According to gdgest (in a 2014 comment below the Judy Brazil youTube video), this song is a "variant of an original Newfoundland song written by Pat Casey of Torbay." According to Steven Doyle (in a 2011 comment below the Foster & Allen youTube video), this song "was written by the lead singer of a band called Simani from Newfoundland. The song was then passed via a friend to John Hogan who was the first to record it." |
