ANNIE'S SONG
Beginner BA1 - Unit 3 (Practice) Song-Melody
John Denver
Accordion Notation
|
The notation below is based on John Denver's recorded performance (as in the third video below). If you are not familiar with the melody, then this is the one to "really" listen to, a few times, if necessary.
Buttons 4 to 7*
|
Place first finger on button 4 and little finger on 7, covering all four buttons, to play without having to shift your hand.

Verse 2 has different lyrics and a slightly different beginning, but otherwise
mostly follows Verse 3 in melody.
Verse 3:
.6 .6 .6* .5* .:6 .:6*~:
You fill up my sen - ses
"5* "5* .5* .6* .6 .5 :4~.:~:
Like a night in a for - est

.5 .5 .5* .6* .:6 .:6*~:

.5* .6* .6 .7* .:6~.:~.:
Come fill me a - gain.
Observations about the Tilde~ Symbol:
1. The tilde symbol ( ~ ) at the end of the lines means that the button note may be held longer. How much longer is suggested by the number of "dots" to the right of the tilde.
2. Singers frequently "rest" their voices for such beat intervals at the end of lines, instead of holding the singing note the whole time; this is a common notation for song melodies.
3. If playing in a group, many accordion players will simply hold such notes longer, as suggested above, others may actually also "rest". If playing solo, many players choose to substitute embellishments or ornamentations to relieve the boredom of playing a long note - more about this later.

I've included 9 videos in the keys of: C=2 D=5 F=1 G=1 (I found only one in G & none in A.)
If you wish to play along video 3 (in key of D), follow the notation above. For most of the other videos, it may be best to stick with the verse 1 notation above.

The lyrics can also be found in many of songbooks, for example, "The Complete Guitar Player Songbook" by Russ Shipton published by Amsco Publications of New York/London/Sydney (1989). I believe this is still in print. |
